I’m making a WordPress blog from scratch. It’s actually a pretty old project that I started in the Summer and I’ve been working on it in my spare time. I began by making a Photoshop mockup, and last month, I finally got around to converting it to HTML and CSS. Then, with the help of Jesse Friedman’s Web Designer’s Guide to WordPress, I created my first WordPress theme from scratch (not a child theme, yay!). I’m not finished, but I’m getting close. I still have to code the archives page and that should be about it. It’s so much fun. The hardest part was just getting started. Ok, onto my links loved…

The secret to making money online by David Heinemeier Hansson. This Startup School video is definitely an oldie but goodie. You don’t have to be a Silicon Valley startup to find wisdom in this keynote.

Whatsapp was recently acquired by Facebook for like, a bajillion dollars. I don’t know how this will affect them (after all, Facebook is an advertising juggernaut), but this old essay about why they chose not to monetize their business with ads is an excellent read. If you enjoy Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Gmail, etc. etc., perhaps you shouldn’t read this. Ignorance is bliss. But, if you’re going to continue using these services (as I will continue to use Google search, Gmail, and Blogger), it’s best to be aware of the true price of “free”.

The Hemingway App. Hello, free online copy editor. Another great site is Writers Write’s 45 Ways to Avoid Using the Word Very.

I stumbled upon some awesome blogs this week via Joy’s blog, Fried Rice Connoisseur. She featured Wide Eyed Legless in a blog spotlight. Via her sidebar links, I arrived at Catch Me If You Fran and from there, I found Girl Crush (inspiration + interview motherlode).

That’s it for now. I hope you enjoy your weekend!
